We Are Sowing

We have little idea of the impact we can make by our simple obedience to the command to take the gospel into all the world, and preach it unto every creature.

The responses to invitations to live the Gospel are not for us to prejudge. Don't seek for people who look like they'd be interested in the Gospel. Don't seek people who look like they'd "fit in."

This approach is like a vacuum cleaner salesman seeking out those who mostly have what he is offering. "Excuse me, Hello. I'm selling vacuum cleaners. The one I offer is just like what you already have, only a less popular model."

Ridiculous, right?

No one ever converted to the Gospel because it was just like what they already had. The Savior came "not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

In the Savior's great parable, we don't see the Sower walking over to the good ground, and kneeling down to carefully plant his seeds one by one where he thought he was likely to have a harvest. (Matthew 13; Mark 4: Luke 8)

He offered every part of the field an equal opportunity for growth.

It's none of our business what others do with our offer to receive the Gospel. Their response is entirely up to them. It ought to be at our best encouragement and clearest invitation, but it must be up to them.

It feels great when others accept an invitation, and we see them begin to make their way onto the path leading to peaceful contentment through the Gospel. But don't mistake this good feeling for the reason we invite others to live the Gospel. If we only act out of our desire to feel good, we are not really doing what we should.

Is it scary?

I've learned that sharing Gospel teachings is not so much about preparing the message or lesson. It's more about preparing myself.

The promises God has made to those willing to open their mouths are amazing!

Don't try too hard to make sure what you say is "the right thing" to say. All need to hear the Gospel. And they need all of it. In beginning our efforts to share the Gospel with others, where we start is less important than when.

"Neither take ye thought beforehand what ye shall say; but treasure up in your minds continually the words of life, and it shall be given you in the very hour that portion that shall be meted unto every man."

Doctrine & Covenants 84: 85

"And the Spirit shall be given unto you by the prayer of faith; and if ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach."

Doctrine & Covenants 42: 14

"Verily I say unto you, he that is ordained of me and sent forth to preach the word of truth by the Comforter, in the Spirit of truth, doth he preach it by the Spirit of truth or some other way?

And if it be by some other way it is not of God.

And again, he that receiveth the word of truth, doth he receive it by the Spirit of truth or some other way?

If it be some other way it is not of God.

Therefore, why is it that ye cannot understand and know, that he that receiveth the word by the Spirit of truth receiveth it as it is preached by the Spirit of truth?

Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together."

Doctrine & Covenants 50: 17-22

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

John 14: 26

You need to build up a library in yourself from which you, or the Holy Ghost, can pull. You don't need to dump a whole library on top of someone. The promise is given that you will know what portion is appropriate to share. As you practice following the spiritual guidance, no matter how awkward at first, it will become clearer to you.

You may even find others beginning to ask, "How did you know I was just thinking of that thing you said?"

Don't expect to read minds, but do trust that God knows that child of His, and can inspire you with what to say to them. Always acknowledge Him in these things, and keep humbling yourself under His watchful care. He will help you in your efforts to help His children.

Remember, most of the time, we are sowing. Don't get discouraged because you aren't seeing a lot of reaping. Success in sharing the gospel is up to the sharer. If the receiver is not ready for big changes yet, that's okay. It's their choice. Having offered someone an opportunity to accept or reject a Gospel invitation is the success.

Don't pick through the seeds. Throw them all. See where they stick.
